Sara studied composition and music history at Otago University, graduating
in 1990. She trained as a secondary school music teacher at Moray House
College in Edinburgh, with primary music as her second subject. Sara has
worked at Arran High School on the Isle of Arran in Scotland before
returning to New Zealand where she has been a head of music in Dargaville,
Whangarei and Feilding.
Sara is an experienced instrumental teacher, particularly in piano and violin. She has also gained her ATCL in voice and has directed a number of choirs and instrumental groups. Sara has written and trialled assessment packages for the new NCEA qualifications in music.
Since returning to Dunedin Sara has relieved in a number of local High Schools. She is now the conductor of the Logan Park High School Choir. Sara is also a member of the Knox Church Choir. She teaches the "Let's Make Music" class at Saturday Morning Music Classes at both the George Street and Macandrew Intermediate centres.
David Rowbottom
David qualified with a Higher National Diploma in Orchestral Instrument
Technology in 1994 at Stevenson College in Edinburgh. He specialised in
orchestral strings but is also qualified to repair woodwind and brass. He
also has a background in engineering which has been a great help in his
music repair work.
David got his start in music playing the trombone at school in England. He became involved in the Brass Band movement there, playing for a Championship Section Band. Brass Banding brought him to New Zealand in 1990 where he played for St Kilda Brass. Since 1994 David has been working as a repairer and as a music teacher, teaching brass, woodwind and drums in Scotland and New Zealand.
Mhairi
The youngest member of the Music Workshop team, Mhairi is already following
in the family music tradition. Mhairi plays violin, guitar and piano and
sings as a junior in the Knox Church Choir.Scott Colvin
Scott is a University of Otago student who has recently been accepted into
the Contemporary Rock Performance degree course on guitar. Scott first
came to the Music Workshop as a Gateway student from Kaikorai Valley
College and has stayed on even after leaving school. Our resident expert
in guitar, Scott helps with setting up instruments and tunes our guitars
each week as well as test-driving as many of them as possible. He has also
taken up the saxophone but won't play in public yet.
